Sister-Doctor Beatrice Pius Kayombo, O.S.B., exemplifies the transformative power of education, perseverance, and service.
Born and raised in rural Tanzania, Sister Beatrice arrived at Benedictine University in 2003 through a partnership between the university and the African Benedictine Sisters of Saint Gertrude in Imiliwaha. Before coming to the United States, she was already serving her community as a registered nurse and midwife. As the only medical professional in her village, she regularly witnessed women suffering and dying from preventable complications during childbirth. Determined to make a greater impact, she set her sights on becoming a physician.
Sister Beatrice earned her Bachelor of Science in Health Science from Benedictine University in 2009. She later completed the requirements for a Master of Public Health degree in 2014 while simultaneously earning her Doctor of Medicine degree from Poznan University of Medical Science in Poznan, Poland.
Following medical school, she traveled to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to complete advanced medical training and an oncology residency. By December 2020, after a seventeen-year educational journey, Sister Beatrice completed her medical training and became an oncologist at Muhimbili National Hospital.
Her accomplishments are especially remarkable considering her humble beginnings. Growing up in a village without running water or electricity, she walked approximately ninety minutes each way to attend school. Classrooms often lacked basic resources such as textbooks and laboratory equipment.
Through determination, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to improving healthcare in Tanzania, Sister Beatrice has become a powerful example of how education can transform lives and communities.
In recognition of her extraordinary achievements and service, Benedictine University honored Sister-Doctor Beatrice Pius Kayombo, O.S.B., M.D., as a 2021 Rising Star Award recipient.
Her story continues to inspire students, healthcare professionals, and communities around the world while reflecting the Benedictine values of service, leadership, and stewardship.
